A business game for management development

nextOne is an online business game. This game has been developed by Simenco in collaboration with five Nyenrode teaching staff, specialised in Strategy, Operations, HRM, Marketing and Finance. In close consultations, one of the most modern business games was created.

One of the unique features is that the game presents five distinct roles: CEO (Chief Executive Officer), CCO (Chief Commercial Officer), CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer), COO (Chief Operations Officer) and CFO (Chief Financial Officer). In addition to the overall team score, each role has its own evaluation, which creates a conflict between the player's self-interest and the company interests.

The case is set in the world of high-tech industry and the company called nextOne produces and sells an innovative Smartphone. This market is transparent and very competitive. nextOne has branches all over the world, different marketing strategies for different markets, it has its own production plant, logistical challenges and policies for human resources vary per continent.

The participants are the nextOne management team and they are required to make strategic, tactical and operational decisions, for each period and for each site, with regard to:

  • Research & Development
  • Purchasing
  • Production & logistics
  • Marketing & sales
  • Finance
  • Personnel management

During the game the participants will receive all sorts of e-mails with useful or distracting and confusing information and they have to anticipate and respond to all sorts of events to the best of their abilities. Think piracy, unrest and dissatisfaction among personnel.

The management team receives information on its performance after every period. That concerns personnel management, market developments, bottlenecks in production, financial indicators, market shares, product quality etc. The score of every member of the management team is determined by the score for the following items (per function):

  • Customer satisfaction (CCO)
  • Market share (CCO)
  • Morale of personnel (CHRO)
  • Profit per employee (CHRO)
  • Profit (CFO)
  • Solvability (CFO)
  • Production and storage costs (COO)
  • Product availability (COO)

The score for the CEO and the whole management team is calculated using a weighted average.
